Colorado Part I

Esme went on yet another road trip! This time to Colorado for Penny's wedding. She's a pretty good traveler right now because she sleeps quite a bit.

The first day we drove to Omaha. We left after an early morning meeting that I had for work. It was a fun day actually. We had to stop quite a bit, but we found out that Iowa has pretty nice gas stations, bathrooms and rest areas. :) Esme was happy to get out of the car... until she fell asleep again.

We also saw wind farms. I've never seen so many windmills! At one, I lost count at 80. It's a crazy skyline to observe.

The second day was interesting and expensive. We got up REALLY early and drove. Esme tends to sleep more in the morning (although she is having more and more awake time every day) so it's normally a good time to travel with her. The trip seemed like it was going to be pretty uneventful, Nebraska is a whole lot like ND. After being on the road for 2 hours Aaron woke me up and said "I forgot my camera in the hotel in Omaha!". We had a crib brought in for Esme and the camera bag ended up on the floor behind the crib so it got missed when we did the room sweep in the morning. Luckily, the hotel was able to overnight it to Ft. Collins - for $107. Unexpected expense #1.

Most of the trip was on the freeway, but after we got into Colorado the last 100 miles or so was 2 lane highway. Not a problem right? Wrong! Literally 10 miles after we got off the freeway my car started acting funny and eventually the engine light came on. Needless to say, I was freaked out. It was 95 degrees, there were no trees in sight to even park under for shade, the towns were small - not even a gas station, just a grouping of about 10 houses - and we still had like 80 miles to go with a 2 month old baby who was by this point entirely tired of being in her car seat! We stopped once in this little town to feed her and we had to pee behind a tree because there was no where else to go! Eventually I got a hold of my lovely VW people in MN (cell phone coverage was sketchy as well) and they assured me that we would make it safely to Ft. Collins. So as soon as we got there Aaron dropped Esme and me off at the hotel and went straight to the VW dealership. They fixed some sensor for $168. Unexpected expense #2. I was too distracted and tense to even think about taking a picture - so there are no pictures of this part of our trip. Sorry.

At the hotel Esme was very happy to be out of the car seat and able to lie on her back and kick. She loves doing that!

Penny stopped by for a minute to say hi. She was busy with last minute wedding tasks so we didn't get to visit long. But it was great to see her again! This time we got a room with 2 beds and Esme slept on one of them. We thought that might be better than a crib - nothing to lose stuff behind! :)
